What October 1st Meant Growing Up

Hey Reader,

Growing up, October 1st always meant two things: A New Month and Independence Day.

As a child, I did not really understand what Independence Day meant or why it mattered. I only knew what we were taught: Nigeria gained independence from Britain on October 1, 1960, and became an Independent nation. Every Nigerian child knew the story.

There was also the Independence Day broadcast by the Head of the Nation. It was almost a ritual. We listened because that was simply what happened every October 1st.

But growing up changed how I saw the day.

As I matured, I began to understand the story beyond the date. I began to see the struggle, the resilience and the people who fought for Nigeria to become a free nation.

66 years later, we may not be where we ought to be. There is still a lot to fix, a lot to build and a lot to hope for.

But perhaps that is also part of our story. We keep going. The resilience is still there. So is the hope that Nigeria will become the country we believe it can be.

Happy Independence Day, Nigeria.
